We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
I’ve been contemplating this quote for some time now and I thought I’d like to share my thoughts with you at this time.
When I read the first sentence and think about what it would mean to be a “human being having a spiritual experience” I realize that’s where I have lived most of my life. This is a mindset that takes me to a place where the external world matters and alters the decisions I make for my life. It is probably where we all live, at least the first half of life. It is a life filled with illusions, assumptions, attachments, vengeance and jealousy. That’s a hard life.
However, when I read the second sentence and think about what it means to be a “spiritual being having a human experience” it takes all of the attachments out of any situation. I am able to see the illusions of life for what they are. They are not reality. It may appear to be reality of the earthly or external world, but it is not the true reality. It is just my issues meeting someone else’s issues, there is no love in the equation and that’s not reality.
The second half of the quote allows me to live from an internal nature, which brings a lot of peace to my life. It is where I hope to live the second half of life. That’s another thought for reflection – before I can live life as a “spiritual being having a human experience” I need to live and experience life as a “human being having a spiritual experience”.
Living as a “spiritual being having a human experience” gives me the space to step back and ask myself different questions, no matter the situation. Questions like: What is the meaning of this situation? What am I to learn from this situation? How can I be of service to this situation?
Reflecting on life situations from this internal perspective allows me to do the best I can to live a life of love. A life filled with peace and Joy!
